What Happened

Hudson V-9097, operating from Bircham Newton with 500 Squadron, came down near Bacton, Norfolk, on 16 January 1942. The aircraft was crewed by four men: Pilot Officer John MacGillivray at the controls, Sergeant Wilfred Albert Sanger as navigator, Pilot Officer Roger Bourne Wark, and Sergeant John Stewart Brownsell, both serving as wireless operators and air gunners. The cause of the crash is not recorded in surviving accounts. All four men were killed; there were no survivors. The full names of Wilfred Albert Sanger and Roger Bourne Wark appear in memorial records, preserving their identities where other details have been lost to time.
