What Happened

On 10 February 1945, Lancaster PB812 AR-Y of 460 Squadron RAAF, based at RAF Binbrook, crashed at Caythorpe near Grantham, Lincolnshire. The aircraft was crewed by men who had largely travelled together from Australia on the same troopship, first forming up in August 1944 at RAF Hixon before converting to the Lancaster at No. 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Lindholme, in December 1944. Pilot Officer Richard Albert George Miller and five of his crewmates — G. Dockery, J. Downing, F. Nesbit-Bell, R. Pope, and A. Robinson — were killed. Flight Engineer Nesbit-Bell, a Briton from Bristol who had originally trained as a pilot in Canada before remustering to his new trade, was among the dead. The fate of bomb aimer Arnold Kloeden is unrecorded.
