Detailed account of Halifax II BB216 (LQ:D) from 405 (Vancouver) Squadron RCAF. The aircraft took off from RAF Topcliffe at 2303 on 1 September 1942 for a bombing mission to Saarbrucken. After crossing the coast at 2344, the port outer engine caught fire; though the blaze was extinguished, structural failure of the port wing followed and the order to bail out was given. At least two airmen fell into the sea and drowned. The Halifax crashed at 2358 near Chapel St Leonards.
