What Happened

On 29 March 1944, two B-24 Liberators of the 93rd Bomb Group, based at Hardwick, departed on a bombing mission to the St Nazaire U-boat pens. Over Henham Park in Suffolk, B-24J 42-110033 *Arizona Rambler* and B-24 41-28590 collided in mid-air. The disaster claimed nineteen lives, among them 2nd Lieutenant Max E. Dailey, aged 21. The two aircraft were crewed by McFetrick's crew aboard 41-28590 and Makinster's crew aboard *Arizona Rambler*.

Halesworth Lions volunteered to renovate the memorial with help from local firms after noticing it had fallen into a dilapidated state.

Only three of the 20 airmen survived the initial crash, and a subsequent explosion during rescue operations killed 19 additional personnel from rescue, medical, and fire-fighting units at nearby Holton Airfield.
